KANEOHE (KHON2) — With rising food and fuel prices and fewer tourists, the impacts are being felt everywhere, including in local restaurants.
“Shipping went up 80% over the last five years, so that has a major impact on us as a small family-run and operated business,” said Felix Koeppenkastrop-Deittert, Il Gelato Hawaii 2nd-generation owner.
“In Hawaii, it’s usually good year-round, but this shoulder season has been exceptionally soft, significantly down,” said Mike Palmer, Kuhio Avenue Food Hall managing partner.
“People who go to restaurants will notice self-ordering kiosks, or maybe changes in their hours, shortening the hours offering specials during those off-peak times,” said Sheryl Matsuoka, Hawaii Restaurant Association president and CEO.
“Increasing prices is always the last resort,” said Koeppenkastrop-Deittert when asked about the possibility of products seeing a price rise. “First of all, what we do is we look internally, how can we make it more efficient? How can we save money? Then, as a last resort, we would have to increase prices.”
