HONOLULU (KHON2) — That extra penny at the register could disappear — or appear — depending on the math.
A new law aimed at easing headaches caused by a nationwide penny shortage took effect in Hawaii on Wednesday, July 1. Businesses are now allowed to round up or down to the nearest nickel.
If the cash total ends in 1, 2, 6 or 7 cents, it rounds down. The total rounds up if it ends in 3, 4, 8 or 9 cents.
