HRA Member HAWAII GAS Begins Renewable Energy Project

Hawaiʻi Gas is embarking on an exciting project this year, one that will benefit the community and the environment.

Renewable natural gas, or RNG, is one of the company’s key priorities as it looks to Hawaiʻi’s clean energy future.  As part of that effort, Hawaiʻi Gas secured an agreement with the City & County of Honolulu in 2016 to capture and utilize biogas from the Honouliuli Wastewater Treatment Plant on Oahu.  Biogas is produced by the breakdown of organic matter in the absence of oxygen.

Honouliuli produces about 800,000 therms of biogas energy per year, which is currently being flared into the atmosphere.  Hawaiʻi Gas will capture this biogas, purify it, and inject it into its gas utility line on Oahu, thereby eliminating the need for about 15,000 barrels of oil that would otherwise have to be imported each year.  It will also reduce greenhouse gases in the state by the amount produced by 400 cars annually.

This first-of-its kind project in Hawaiʻi is now under construction, and is expected to be ready by this fall.
