3 Dental Must-Haves, According to Your Dentistby Hawaii Dental Service

We love that fresh, clean feeling we get every time the dentist cleans our teeth. We almost wish our teeth could feel like that every day! But since our dentist can’t meet us in the bathroom every morning, we have to settle for our own in-house routine.

Here are 3 must-have products that can help you achieve that dentist-level clean:

  1. Electric Toothbrush

When it comes to brushing effectively, the key is proper technique and regular use, whether it’s with a manual or electric toothbrush. Here’s where electric has the upper bristle:

  • Consistent speed and pressure – Electric brushes can reduce plaque by 21% and help prevent gum disease, according to one study.
    • Easier to use – This is especially helpful for children, or people struggling with arthritis and mobility.
    • More fun! – Which means more incentive to brush!

Is an electric toothbrush not in your budget? No worries! Just make sure your manual toothbrush meets expectations. Choose one with bristles that aren’t too hard or that isn’t too big for your mouth.

  1. Fluoridated Toothpaste

Professional fluoride treatments offer extra protection against decay but are not necessary beyond your regular check-up. What matters most is that your toothpaste contains fluoride, a natural mineral known to help strengthen tooth enamel.

What else should you be considering for your toothpaste? Dentists say to look for brands that are not overly abrasive, as too much abrasion can cause enamel damage and tooth sensitivity. Also avoid pastes containing a flavoring agent, as those can actually cause cavities.

  1. Interdental Brushes

Hate flossing? Dentists recommend replacing (or supplementing, for you overachievers!) this daily habit with interdental brushing. When used correctly, these small brushes have been shown to remove more plaque and make contact with more surface area than flossing alone. Bonus: If you have sensitive gums, this method also reduces bleeding!

Overwhelmed? When in doubt, look for products with the American Dental Association’s Seal of Approval. Happy cleaning!
